Orvieto

City of Etruscan origins, then papal stronghold, Orvieto rises majestically above a tuff platform overlooking a lush valley. Its singular position, its medieval appearance, its masterpieces of art and its famous white wine make it a must-see destination for tourists from all over the world. Its most famous monument, the Duomo, with its bold and colorful façade, is one of the grandest examples of Italian Gothic: 33 architects, 152 sculptors, 68 painters and 90 mosaicists contributed to its creation which began in 1290 and ended in the 14th century.
In addition to the Cathedral and the dizzying well of St. Patrick, the numerous Etruscan remains in the city and the surrounding area are worth a visit.
